H. E. “Sonny” Cauthen, Jr.

H. E. “Sonny” Cauthen, Jr., is president and CEO of Cauthen & Associates, a Montgomery, Alabama firm that focuses on governmental relations, public affairs, and corporate business development at the state and local level. Sonny is also a founding partner of the Washington, D. C., lobbying firm, Cauthen Forbes & Williams.

Sonny began his political career as a volunteer in the 1970 Alabama gubernatorial campaign, advancing to the ranks of a paid campaign staffer in the 1974 race. He later worked as the executive assistant to a former Public Service Commissioner, allowing him to develop an expertise in the electricity industry and the legislative and executive branches of Alabama government. Shortly thereafter, he founded Cauthen & Associates.

A former member of the Alabama State Democratic Executive Committee and a veteran of several state and national campaigns, Sonny served both the Clinton/Gore ’96 reelection campaign and the 2000 Gore/Lieberman campaign as Vice Chairman for Business Outreach. He was a Trustee of the Democratic National Committee and member of the National Finance Board and the Democratic Business Council.

Outside the firm, Sonny is involved in several agricultural operations, including a diversified, family owned cattle ranch, and he holds an interest in the Teague Crossing Development Company, with properties adjacent to the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of Alabama plant near Montgomery. As an avid outdoorsman, Sonny is keenly interested in all aspects of wildlife management and maintains the family ranch as a hunting preserve. He sits on the board of directors of the Alabama Wildlife Federation.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Sonny graduated from the University of Alabama and is married to the former Florence Minor Mangum, also a native of Montgomery. She is an attorney and former U. S. Marshal for the Middle District of Alabama. They have two children, Belle Churchwell Cauthen and Eugene Preston Mangum Cauthen.

Joseph B. McCormick

Since graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in History and Political Science, Joseph “Jody” McCormick has worked as a legislative and research assistant at Cauthen & Associates. Jody, first established as a student at the University of Alabama, is a registered lobbyist specializing in legislative, agency, and municipal lobbying, and is growing a state-wide network of young political and business leaders.

While at the University of Alabama, Jody interned in the Washington, D.C., offices of Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) and former Congressman Terry Everett (R-AL). Most recently, McCormick directed a successful “Grasstops” campaign for the Alliance for Quality Nursing Home Care in Alabama’s fifth congressional district. Jody also worked as community organizer and fundraiser in Bradley Byrne’s 2010 Alabama gubernatorial campaign and has been a vital campaign staffer in numerous other campaigns for local offices in Montgomery.

A native of New Brockton, Alabama, Jody is married to the former Barbara Hamlin Agricola, a native of Montgomery, Alabama, and an attorney with Jemison & Mendelsohn. Jody’s interests include hunting and fishing and he currently serves as Chairman of the Central Alabama Chapter of Delta Waterfowl. Jody is very involved in the community and does several youth hunts throughout the year to get the youth involved in positive extracurricular activities at a young age.
